The May 30 editorial “The sound of silencers” ignored the real public-health benefits of firearm suppressors and instead repeated false statements made by gun control groups — claims The Post’s own fact-checking reporter has debunked. Severe hearing loss is a very real problem for shooters, who also can suffer tinnitus and deafness later in life. Suppressors, which can help prevent hearing loss, are expensive and difficult to get, but The Post is against a bill to streamline the process. The editorial stated that “silencers” pose a safety threat because there is not as much of a “bang” to alert others to criminal gunfire.

Woman fired weapon in self-defense

Police said a woman shot and killed a man in self-defense when after investigators said he tried to force his way into her Cobb County apartment. It happened just before 3 a.m. Friday at the Liberty Point Apartments on Franklin Gateway Road. Witnesses told police that right before the shooting the man was kicked and kicked the door in threatening everyone inside the apartment. Marietta Police said a party turned deadly when a woman asked a man and two women to leave. They did, but police said the man came back and insisted on getting in and even threatened everyone inside the home. Police said the man acted like he had a gun.

Lancaster city homeowner shoots intruder after early Sunday morning break-in

A Lancaster resident took “action that he thought was necessary” when he shot a man who kicked in the front door of his home Sunday morning, an official said. Police are continuing to investigate the incident which occurred around 2:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Marietta Avenue. They said William Louis Stewart, 46, of Lancaster, kicked in the door, prompting a woman who lives there to scream for help from the first floor.

The Washington Post -- in one of its rare reversions to journalism – recently issued a fact check that handed Americans for Responsible Solutions and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) three Pinocchios for overstating the noise-canceling properties of firearm suppressors. “There is little that’s quiet about a firearm with a silencer, unless one also thinks a jackhammer is quiet,” the report concluded.
